First U.S. troop fatality in Afghanistan in 2017 from Eglin

Staff Sgt. Mark R. De Alencar, 37, of Edgewood, Md., sustained fatal injuries when his unit came in contact with enemy forces using small arms fire during combat operations.

De Alencar was assigned to 1st Battalion, 7th Special Forces Group (Airborne) at Eglin Air Force Base, Fla. He was participating in a mission in Nangarhar province against ISIS-Khorasan, the Afghan branch of the terrorist group, when he was killed, according to a statement released by the Pentagon.

De Alencar’s remains will arrive at Dover Air Force Base, Delaware, on Monday evening, according to a release from Air Force Mortuary Affairs Operations.
